I have a confession—I’m kind of obsessed with my pedometer. There’s something very satisfying about knowing the number of steps and miles you’ve walked in a given day. The other night my roommate and I were vegged out on the couch, watching Grey’s Anatomy. After a long day at work, I have the tendency to become a super couch potato—a habit that I’m trying to break. But get this! I looked down at my pedometer and I had only walked 3.5 miles and the goal is 5 a day. It was dark and cold outside, but I couldn’t let my pedometer down. I put on my shoes and jacket and took a trip to Target, which is open late. (Note: I live in the city and the walk to Target, even at 9:30 p.m., is very safe.) The distance from my apartment to Target and a loop around the store was 1.5 miles. My relationship with my pedometer got me off the couch!

Hi this has been a lot of fun so far. I wanted to start a walking program, but didn't have any incentive. Although I am new to the area, I have already walked twice along around a local lake, which I'd never done before. It was great! Already I have walked a lot. Here is a webpage I thought might be helpful to you. Some of them are difficult hikes, but I found some mellow walks along the beach that range from mild to moderate that might be ideal for people with families. Take care, Jessica

I've been walking for over a year now. Walking a lot! I think it's a bad day when I don't hit 20,000 steps. If you really want to get obsessed, get a pedometer that measures consecutive (no break) steps - that's when the exercise starts. Last Sunday a friend and I walked 15 miles all over our town. There was an antique show going on down town so we walked to it. We carry backpacks so we can cart anything we buy - the weight just adds to the exercise. If my husband and I want to go out to dinner - we start walking - the closest restaurant is about 3 miles away. By the time you go there and back, you have burned off your meal. It's great - plus, we really save on gas! Anyway, I'm clocking about 75 miles a week in this challenge so you guys better put on your walking shoes!
